Letter-sized self-mailers

There are several changes on the horizon for letter-sized folded self-mailers. If you are beginning the design process for mailing campaigns in early 2012, please contact us to discuss the changes. If you've been mailing the same design for years, these upcoming changes could affect those designs – even to the point of no longer being able to mail. Check back often for details.

Mailing booklets (Effective Sept. 8, 2009)

The new physical standards for booklets are as follows:

  • Height: No less than 3.5 inches, no more than 6 inches
  • Length: No less than 5 inches, no more than 10.5 inches
  • Thickness: No less than 0.009 inches, no more than 0.25 inches
  • Weight: No more than 3 ounces
  • Aspect ratio: Within 1.3 to 2.5
  • Tabs: Non-perforated, at least 1.5 inches in width, 3 tabs required

A booklet, by definition, must have a bound edge, including sheets fastened with at least two staples in the manufacturing fold (saddle stitched), perfect bound, pressed-glued, or anything else joined together by another binding method that produces an end where pages are attached together.

Preparing for the Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMB)
(Effective January 2011)

Effective in 2011, all mail processed through the United States Postal Service (USPS) will have an intelligent mail barcode (IMB).

An IMB will increase data capacity within the barcode, allow for unique identification of mailing pieces, and provide more accurate and detailed information about mailings. In order to meet the requirements necessary to process an IMB, all mailers who have a permit with the USPS must also have a mailer identification number (MID). We encourage you to apply as soon as possible for your MID to avoid any backlog.

You can only apply for your MID with the USPS online by clicking here. If you are not an existing user, you will have to register as a new user to continue.

If you already have a MID and wish to change it, please complete this form.

When using your permit to mail, please be prepared to provide your MID when you submit your mailing list to Pittsburgh Mailing. We cannot process any data without the MID.
